you may have to read several times before it sinks in
you're sewing a straight piece to a round piece and the bulk of the fabric is going to wadded up inside. I would thread a hand needle and baste it like I think it goes ( you don't have to make real small stitches but be sure they are sturdy enough for you to turn it rightside out) then if it's right you can sew it by machine and pull out the hand stitches, or leave them in if they don't show
