I think a lot of the quilts are texturally interesting to keep the patients enganged. (Corduroy, wool, shiny stuff, etc.) Alzheimer's is such a scary disease.
As far as the entries to the Ugly Contest. I can imagine that the people who enter the contest have a sense of humor and are not tied to ego.
