They can be any size block. Usually people make them in different small sizes such as 1", 1&1/2", 2", 2&1/2" or 3".
Postage stamp is about the size of 1". I have 2 different quilt tops that I started and one is 2" and the other is 2&1/2" Maybe I will get them done one of these days.
