Suzi, in my case I purchased the machine and tried to get it to make a stitch. No go. It wouldn't pick up the bobbin thread and the feed dogs were stuck in the up position. They wouldn't lower. I didn't want to mess with the timing. Though, since I've tackled other repairs lately, in the future this may be something I'm going to attempt. After picking it up, it sews like brand new.
