I have sewn and purchased cloth diaper for my sons (3.5 years and 2) and really recommend just purchasing them. Some are quite pricy, but cheaper than disposable in the long run. Pocket diapers are my favorites, but if you are interested in prefolds, then I really like Green Mountain Diapers. By the time I purchased supplies and added my time a kit from Econobum ($50 US) was cheaper.

Most cloth diaper stores have clearance, and craigs list is great for mommas getting rid of stash.

btw i have patterns from Very Baby(like), Ottobre(runs big), New Conceptions(using the trainers) and an independent who no longer sells. My favorite place for PUL is Wazoodle.

ETA make sure the momma will use them before investing a lot. i made a bunch for SIL who wanted them, and then she only used them once and gave them away. washing them "grossed her out". I know a gift, but a HUGE time and financial investment on my part.
