People sorta make them what ever size they see fit. A mug rug that I have right next to me here at my computer is 8" across by 6" high. I can set a cookie/snack and a mug. Personally, I usually have a can of diet coke and a tea mug. I think it is just something a bit different than a coaster and a great reason to practice making a smaller size quilt, something you can personalize as a small gift for someone and/or use up scraps of fabric... which we all seem to have. Some people put a pocket on one side to slip tea bags in or a snack. Hope this helps. :-D
