I've done lots of quilts without a border. A scrappy one in particular looks just great without a border - just a binding. Fat quarters and charm packs and layer cakes are great to build a stach. If you get yardage, I'd get at least a half yard. You will build a stash faster.
This is the bed quilt I just finished, with no border.I think it looks fine.
