Have you removed the paper from ray sections? I was going to suggest a glue stick to hold the ray section to the other sections. I also pinned the beginning and the end and placed the wide section on the feed-dogs with the shorter section on the pressure foot side. I found that I didn't need to pin much other that the start and stop.
