I don't find them unsturdy and I use them all the time. You might try just making one and plan to use it as a mini wall hanging or something if you find it doesn't work for you. Mind you, I use actual coffee mugs on mine not light weight bone china tea cups. On tea cups, I don't really know. :-D
I always have my glass of water, I don't want it to tip over. So I wonder?
