I understand your problem...I just used the identical fabric in a quilt...mixed it with pinks.
As another quilter posted, press and cut it from the back and it will be easier. You might want to cover the fabric to the right of the ruler with a solid fabric to minimize the amount of this black and white piece available to your eyes.
