The problem with shadows is texture. Unless high contrast, like under a streetlamp at night, the objects on which the shadow is cast show. Whatever color you choose, if the quilt isn't going to get rough wear, the shadow might be translucent applique over the background or the shadow parts an overdye of the background fabric(s).
