You need to try "paperless paper piecing." You put your design on freezer paper. Fold the paper on the line and stitch next to the line, not through the paper. When you press your seams open, the fabric sticks to the freezer paper and stays in place.

I've seen a couple of these quilted with two or three rows of parallel lines in the bars.

Agreed! I love using freezer paper! I have only used and will only use this method in future! Think I might give this pattern a try as a 3 yr project!
