Not weird, nice. Top stitch very close to the edge after turning and pressing. If they want to balloon add another row of top stitching further in. Alternatively, top stitch from corner to corner.
If you could find commercial napkins in a coordinating color you could applique a motif from your placemat in a corner or bind the ready mades in material matching the mats. That would be my choice.
