I found that Nancy Chong's 2-fabric applique patterns were the perfect way to learn to do needle turn applique. They are fairly small, and you aren't dealing with lots of tiny applique pieces that have to be layered - just one piece of fabric on top of another. They're perfect for a portable hand project.
