I went to bookoodles of yard sales this summer and found enough coffee mugs for 25 cents each to fill a plastic bin. I'll be using my scraps to make mug organizers to put in them. I'll be making around 50 of them to give as gifts this year. And I like them so well, I'll make one for myself too! ;-)
This summer I've bought cups from 10 cents to 3.99 for a cute fancy CHINA cup and saucer. I won't be doing as many as you, but I'll do a good 15-20.
