One of my most interesting quilt classes I have been to, the instructor does exactly this - "faces" the quilt rather than more traditional binding. His quilts were often 'fractured' and doing the facing makes it easierto manage all the twists and turns.

So, just like you'd face a blouse or jacket, you can face your quilt :)
