By the way, I have a Brother Innovis 4000D (which is a much more expensive machine than this one) and have the same problem with the needle defaulting to the left. Can't tell you how many needles I've broken.
You can change this on the Innovis 4000D. You are going to love me! Turn on your machine and touch the lowest left corner button that looks like a page. Make sure you are now on the Sewing tab. The lowest selection is the needle position--you can change it to the center position. I wish I could do it also on the CS6000i.
