The newsletter's way sounds like a 'quilt as you go' system, only doing so in sections.
It will work- but it depends on your quilt design, and it too sounds like it would be cumbersome on the machine. Not to mention a lot of handquilting.

Here's another reference to another style of quilting as you go, it's easier and quicker, and appears to be adaptable to many block styles. My next quilt will be a queen sized one, and I plan on doing a version of the 'fun and done' style.
