I love the beach! Thats why I moved south. I'd never seen the ocean and hubs took me on a vacation to Jeykell Is, and then we moved here about 1 yr later. lol. Don't live too close to the water (hurricanes ). We're in Hampton; my fav beach is Hunting Is (state park). We have a state pass (50$ a yr and you get into all state parks on it) so going is really not a $ issue, and at the end of the island, just before Fripp is a state pier the pass lets us use, and we can fish there in the ocean (they have the fishing gear for free on the pass too - but we have to buy the bait).
Love Beaufort - also crowded now. We've been here long enough to remember Beaufort as a very nice seaside town, just a regular little town. Now its become rather "artsy schfartsy" . I think, unless the people of the town try to keep things in check, Beaufort will be HHI # 2. HHI is nice, but too much like up north for us. The park beach is very family friendly and usually very uncrowded.

for anyone who wants to "know" this area find the movie(oldie) The Water is Wide. Its from Pat Conroys first novel (think it was his first), set in the area and filmed here I think. About (his) first job as a teacher in an all black school on an island across from Beaufort. parts of Forest Gump was filmed in the area too. sharet
