The top frame (the hoop, four legs and the circle base) are removeable. The base has magnets installed into the wood and they clip on to the lazy susan spinner that is hidden in this picture.

My FIL made me one but without the base. I love mine. Seems the base would get in your way when quilting on your lap unless it's removable.
