Hi, if you are still looking for a date bread recipe baked in tin cans, here is my mothers recipe. I make it often, using 4 tin cans, the size veggies come in, 15 oz I think. It is great for gifts or traveling, serve as is or with cream cheese or butter. I think this recipe was popular during the war, only 1 tbsp butter.

Prepare 4 tin cans by greasing and lightly flouring.
Combine 1 tbsp butter
2 1/2 to 3 cups mixture of dates, raisens, nuts etc.
1 tsp soda
Over this pour 1 cup boiling water. Stir and let cool
Cake - Beat 2 large eggs until light
Slowly add 1 cup sugar and 1 tsp lemon or orange
extract.
Stir together 2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
Add the dry ingredients to egg mixture, stir in the nut/date
mixture
Pour into the 4 tin cans, bake at 325 for 55 min
I let them cool for a few minutes and remove from tins and finish cooling on rack.
