From a Machine Tech's point of view... Never sew over pins. First of all if you do hit a pin, your needle is damaged and you need to replace it. The worst thing that could also happen is you can send your machine out of time (or alignment)... Think of hitting a pothole hard with your car. It is better to pull the pins before you get to them, than to risk damaging your machine.
