I used to live is So. Ca. too, was there for that big one in the 70's. It woke me up and I just said to myself, if I am going to die, I am dying in bed. DH and I had just moved into a new apartment and had a huge set of crystal glasses sitting on our kitchen table. They all tinkled, lightly bumping into each other, but nothing was broken- was very earie, I still remember that sound. I think that was more of a rolling quake.
