It's an old chenille bedspread. My Mom had one similar (different pattern) but the same cotton backing with chenille strips set apart. Same colours even.
My guesstimate would be 1939 vintage, as that's the year they were married and I suspect it was part of her original trousseau or gifts.
I still have it ... and it's been washed many times and still looks lovely. Though now it only gets TLC
