I, too, make my own binding. I like to match the fabric to the quilt. I much prefer bias binding 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 inches wide, although straight-of-grain binding will do also. Machine stitch it to the front, then hand stitch it carefully to the back, mitering the corners. Store-bought bias tape simply does not make satisfactory binding as it doesn't wear very well.
