I am fixing to machine applique around all of these, and just wondered how you all would do it? I usually will change thread color, and match each color to each individual piece, or contrast depending on the look I want. As you all know, this does take quite a bit of time, and starts and stops, tying off all the different threads, etc...debating on "breaking out a bit", and trying something new...A quilty friend suggested using grey thread around all. Just wanting some other opinions...thanks!!

Try a sample, but use a straight line of stitching very close to the edge . Use matching colors, stitch all browns, greens, yellows, etc. at the same time, leaving long tails. Tie them all at the same time, by pulling the top thread to the back, and knotting them together there, clipping the ends. That process saves an amazing amount of time!
If you fused them, experiment with other stitches, like
a triple straight stitch.
