Are you familiar with Quiltsmart? It's a line of printed fusible interfacing which has a Mariner's Compass, amoung other patterns. Very, very easy and quick. Have done this pattern, their dahlia and their Lone Star - all are template free and make for nice sharp intersections. Check out
