It may get rid of the smells; it will also take of all your ruling lines if you rub it; salt is abrasive. Salt & ice cubes is a great way to clean a glass coffee pot that is all grungy. You toss them in, add the salt (a tablespoon or less will do), swirl it around, and presto! clean decanter.

As for the smell, I find that Odo-Ban, which is only available at Sam's Club (not Wal-Mart), is great for most smells and is a disinfectant, too. You buy it by the gallon concentrate, and dilute with water. Use different solutions for different purposes. It has an aroma that is similar to Old Spice, which I happen to like. I use it for pet smells all the time.
