My first large project was a butterfly quilt for a 5 year old. Here is a suggestion for a layout that is easy and effective.

The butterflies are made from a pattern similar to the one you chose. The blank spaces between them are quilted with a butterfly (a ghost butterfly) and the center is simply a flower that I liked.
