i've used lots of serger threads for quilting- if the thread does not break easily and you can get your tension right you can use it
i've also used silk thread that is alot finer than serger thread- with wonderful results.
as long as the machine will accept the thread- and it does not break constantly you can use it- people long-arm with metallics, invisible thread, silk thread, wool thread, all kinds of threads....no way to know if it will work for YOU until you try it- personally- i never use (regular sewing thread) for long arm quilting. i save that for piecing
