Okay it's not that bad, but it's definitely not like driving a car where the slightest pressure gets it going. And sometimes I can get it to start out slow, sometimes it starts out a little too fast for me!

Are there more responsive foot pedals out there?
I do think they wear out. I just received a new one for my featherweight. My old pedal was fixed more than once and worked a few times. Wish me luck; I am getting her ready for a class this week!
