without seeing, it is hard to say...perhaps you could slip small pieces of heat n bond lite under those pieces and fuse it closed..OR perhaps you can get some very sheer tulle or oganza and cut squares the same size as your patches, then stitch over it to hold that fabric in place, which will also add an artsy element to the quilt!
