One thing to remember --- before you change your avatar picture you have to remove the old one. It's a two step process.
Go to the bottom of your profile page and click on "update avatar" - that will remove the current photo.
Then go back to the bottom of your profile page... click on Browse; navigate to the location of the new photo you want to use; click open.
Then select the "update avatar" button. Viola!
