I always use parchment paper when fusing appliques. It is very inexpensive at the grocery store and you can use the roll of parchment to line your baking pans, too. I get a medium size sheet of the paper and fold it in half and place my applique inside to make sure nothing sticks to either the ironing board cover or the iron. Good Luck in the future. :)
