I think because it's "traditional" for MEN to name machines of any sort after women...we follow suit. We most likely wouldn't if we thought about why they say the machines are females...

I thought perhaps it was because the majority of them were owned by women? Not that the other reason could be very valid.. especially when acting persnickety. 8-)

My Machines:
Singer 221 FW - Miss Compton, as that was the name along with tension notes that were written in very "old timey" cursive in the owner's manual. She was purchased on ebay about 6 years ago.

Singer model-15 treadle - Irma, after my Great-Grandmother that bought her new and loved her for many years. :)

Singer 9022 - Martha, after my Grandmother that sewed many a baby blanket and quilt on her. I inherited her in December.

Other machines:
1923 Singer 99 hand crank, Two Singer 185J machines, a Singer 40K hand crank, and my Kenmore that I purchased new in 1991.
I've not named my other machines.
