Figure out which features you want. Here are my favorites:
1. Lots of feet
2. Lots of different stitches
3. Up / down permanent needle position
4. Thread cutter on the machine (this makes SUCH a difference)
5. The larger the machine bed, the better for quilting.
6. Portability; so you can take your machine to classes.

I totally agree! Sewed on a Singer for 30 yrs. Currently have a newer Singer and a Janome. Use the Janome almost exclusively since it has som many options and built-ins. It is wonderful to quilt on but he little Singer does fine on straight seams. I usually have 2 projects going: one being pieced on the Singer, and one being FMQ'd on the Janome. :)
