I went back and re-read the manual, down at the bottom of the page there is a caution against pulling the fabric toward you while using the open toe foot to FMQ. I was using regular sewing thread and it would shred and break when I pulled the fabric toward me. I have not tried using the closed toe, but will try it in my next practice session. I agree with you that it is near impossible to to FMQ without moving the fabric toward you. I got good results when moving side to side.
