The pattern I got off the net said it was a pattern weight. I love the idea of a pincushion though. I don't think I would use it as just a pattern weight. I think that would be more for someone who cuts large pattern pieces. Like clothing.I just wanted one cause it was a chicken and I thought it looked so sweet. Mary
