If you really are unsure of how to use it, I am sure there is a local charity supplying quilts to kids. In our county, there are good choices: both the hospital and a private social work agency dealing with kids in placement take in quilts for kids in need, as do many churches.
I keep one lap quilt in the car because DH likes it cooler than I do. A quilt is much nicer than an argument.
