I agree with a sampler. You can start with more simple blocks and move on to more complicated blocks. I started quilting about a year and a half ago with no real sewing experience at all. I took a class at my LQS and made a king sized quilt with twenty five 15" blocks. I'll list the squares I did and the technique used as best I can:

Straight seam block: Patience Corner - Alabama

Triangles : Churn Dash - Old Maid's Puzzle - Ohio Star - Card Tricks -
Geometric - Pinwheels and Squares - Jack In the Box

8 Point Centers: Spider Web - Kaleidoscope

Here are a couple of pics:

Strips: Log Cabin - Bright Hopes - Over the Rainbow - Bricks

Applique: Dresden Plate - Grandmother's Fan

Curves: Sunflower - Love Ring - Fools Puzzle - Rob Peter to Pay Paul

Just some ideas on how you can start out really easy and expand. You gain LOTS of experience and confidence this way!
