You can also purchase a flannel fabric with a grid on it. I think it's about 2" apart. It's really nice for getting your pieces all lined up square.
Here's a picture of the design wall at the LQS when I was doing my OBW. It was sure a plus that we each had our own design wall to work with as we made our hexes.
