I'm with you, when I give a quilt I expect a thank you and/or a photo of the person with the quilt. I have a scrapbook of all my quilts and like to remember who I gave it to. Most of my recepients know that I expect this, but then also, I have family members who don't even thank me. I'm not sure what happened to manners ... like you said, they expect a gift, at least the could acknowledge it.
