Not OT at all.

The reason the partial seam technique would be used is to REDUCE the number of seams.

Sure, you could take the diagram of the quilt and draw lines so you have a ton of 9patch or 16 patch blocks.
But each one would be different, plus you'd be cutting up some of the single rails into multiple pieces.
So you'd end up with more pieces, which means more seams.
And those seams cutting up a single rail - those can be noticeable if not matched up exactly.

So using partial seams eliminates that.
Plus, when people will be looking at YOUR quilt, you can watch them trying to figure out how the heck you did it.
That's always worth something. ;-)
