Just a question, how do you prevent all the unravling on the raw edges from clogging up your washer?
Well............I've been told that rag quilts should be washed at a laudromat the first time or two to prevent costly repair to the washing machine, but I'm hard-headed so I put it in my machine at home and was shocked at how much debris was floating around in the water, so I got a strainer and a bowl and proceeded to skim all the floating fibers from the water. I kept resetting the timer so it wouldn't start draining before I was satisfied that there wasn't much trash left. And I did it again in the rinse cycle. I skimmed out a bowlful of lint. And that was after I ran it through the dryer several time so the lint trap would catch most of it and had to clean that out every five minutes. That process did not go as well as I'd hoped. My brother in law is an appliance repairman so I knew who to call if I had a problem, but he's not cheap, even for relatives.

Do NOT wash rag quilts in your home washing machine the first time. Do NOT!

I have run another load of clothes through and it worked fine but next time I will find a laudromat for the rag quilt.
