Since you didn't specify frame quilting (for which a straight stitch only machine might be best), let me recommend that you consider the Baby Lock Quest Plus (I have it and LOVE it) or Serenade, or the similar Pfaff Smarter C1100 Pro, Elna 7300 or Janome 6600. All well under $2000, even as low as $1000. If you do plan to use a frame, the Juki straight stitch 2010 has been as low as $600 and then you could use another machine for sewing and piecing.
