Molly I don't think they are. I wrote the book. If you are willing to pay attention to tracing the features of the fabric onto your clear template then find the repeat and mark the next one until you have all you need - that is the only "hard" part is making sure you have repeats. Then you sew them together and applique them onto a background or make them into a hot pad. The directions for both of these are in the book. I showed an easy way to applique or at least I think it is easy.
As Sulabug said they don't take long to make and it is exciting to see what they will look like!
