I hadn't heard that about the batting before. Some have used steel wool, though I'd think it would break down and come out as dust thru the fabric. Which makes me wonder about the sand? Does it not do the same and dust out?

For all foodstuffs, I'd be leary of bugs, mice, etc. who may want a snack!!!! :)
That's why i like sand,it's free.Yes the batting,i feel on my older pins at the tips.It takes years for that to happen,now my pincushion has sand in it.I don't fell any sand coming out.
