You don't need software to USE the design you downloaded, but if you actually want to SEE it on your computer you will need software such as Embird or Palette or a number of others. To use the design just copy it from your computer onto the memory stick and take the stick to your machine.
I have a Brother PE770. When I open the design on my sewing machine I get a black silhouette of the design but can't see detail. I am researching software to be able to see the design on my computer, and I'm finding a wide range from $150 (basic upgradable Embird) to $4000. Happy sewing.
