Speaking of language, I noticed in your original post you mentioned your friend's 'lounge suite'. From watching HGTV Househunters International I've come to know this is what we call our 'living room' (older version - 'parlor'). Now a days 'living room is also used interchangeably with 'family room' (which usually is less formal than a 'living room').
