I had this problem with my Tin Lizzie 18 and found that the needle wasn't in straight. Put a straight pin in the eye of the needle and see if they eye is pointing the right way. If not, rotate your needle.
Needles of longarm machines don't have the flat part of the back and are perfectly round. They can get out of alignment and can break your thread.
